InVilla Spa brings Balinese massage to villas and homes in six areas of Bali. Balinese massage is the island’s own technique: long strokes, kneading and acupressure with warm oil, medium to firm; at your villa it takes 60 or 90 minutes and no planning at all. Your therapist arrives with the table, the linens and the oil, at a time we confirm before you book. See all massage at home.

When to book a Balinese massage

Any afternoon of the stay, really; nobody needs a reason for a Balinese massage. These are the afternoons guests name most.

The day you land

The flight is in your neck and your calves. An hour of long strokes on the first afternoon, and the holiday starts.

The day after the big one

The surf, the volcano at sunrise, the rice-field walk, the wedding. Legs and shoulders that did more than usual; ninety minutes if it was a long day.

The afternoon with nothing planned

Which is the point of a villa. Book four o'clock, let the light go soft over the pool, and the evening arrives on its own.

The last day, and any day in between

Book it for the last afternoon and travel home loose instead of stiff. Staying a while? Book the same therapist by name; we keep your pressure and focus notes.

What a Balinese massage involves

A full-body oil massage: long, gliding strokes to warm the muscle, kneading where it holds tension, thumb pressure on the points along the back, shoulders and legs, and a slow finish at the head. You choose light, medium, firm or deep, and you can change it at any point. We use cold-pressed Bali coconut oil, or unscented grapeseed oil if you prefer.

A Balinese massage at your villa

You message us the treatment, the time and your villa; we reply within 10 minutes with your therapist’s name, her photo and her arrival time. She sets up the table, the linens and the oil in a quiet spot of about 2 by 3 metres, indoors or in the shade. The massage takes 60 or 90 minutes. Afterwards, plan nothing for an hour: drink water, rinse off the oil when you are ready, and let it settle.

Questions about Balinese massage at home

What is a Balinese massage?
A Balinese massage is a full-body oil massage that combines long strokes, kneading and acupressure. The therapist warms the muscle with gliding strokes, works the tension out with her palms and thumbs, and presses the points along the back and legs. It is the island's own technique, taught in every spa school here, and it is what most guests mean when they ask for "a Bali massage".
Is it firm or gentle?
You choose. Say light, medium, firm or deep when you book, and change your mind at any point; your therapist checks in after the first few minutes and whenever she moves to a new area. A Balinese massage should never hurt. If you want real depth on a tight back, book deep tissue instead; it is done on the table for exactly that reason.
Which oils are used?
Cold-pressed Bali coconut oil, unscented, in single-use portions. If you have a nut or coconut allergy, or simply prefer no scent at all, your therapist brings unscented grapeseed oil instead; tell us when you book. For a scented blend, look at the aromatherapy massage, which is the same strokes with the oil you choose.
How long should I book?
Sixty minutes is a full-body massage at an even pace. Ninety minutes is the same routine with time to slow down on the back, neck and legs, which is where most travel tension sits. If you have a specific problem area, or it is your first afternoon after a long flight, book ninety; if it is the second massage of the week, sixty is plenty.
